The Prescription — Acts 2:38

The Prescription: The Plan of Salvation

How the Healing of Christ Is Received

If sin is the disease, and Christ is the Great Physician, then the next question is unavoidable: How is His healing received? The answer must not come from church tradition, personal feeling, or popular teaching. It must come from Scripture. The Bible does not leave man to guess how salvation is received. God has revealed a clear response to the gospel — seen in the preaching of Christ, the commands of the apostles, and the conversions recorded in the book of Acts. This response is not man earning salvation by works of merit. It is the obedient response of faith to the grace God has offered through Jesus Christ.

Why a Prescription Is Necessary

The Great Physician Does Not Heal Without Giving Terms

A physician who diagnoses disease but gives no prescription leaves the patient without help. In the same way, Christ did not merely reveal man's condition. He also revealed how the sinner must respond to receive forgiveness and life.

Many people speak of salvation in vague terms — "just accept Jesus," "invite Him into your heart," or "be spiritual." But the question is not what sounds sincere. The question is: What does the Bible say?

Acts 16 — The Philippian Jailer

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

He asked the right question. Salvation is not too important to leave undefined. Eternity is too weighty for guesswork.

The gospel is God's power unto salvation (Romans 1:16), but the New Testament shows that this saving message calls for a response. God offers grace. Man must respond in obedient faith. That response is consistently seen in biblical teaching:

1.Hear the Word
2.Believe in Christ
3.Repent of Sin
4.Confess Christ
5.Be Baptized
6.Live Faithfully

This is not a ladder of human merit. It is the prescribed response to the gospel.

1
Romans 10:14–17

Hear the Word

Faith Begins With the Message of Christ

No one can believe what he has never heard. Salvation begins when the gospel is proclaimed and received.

Romans 10:17

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Faith does not arise from emotion, instinct, family tradition, or inner feeling. Faith comes by hearing the message God has revealed about Christ. The sinner must hear who Jesus is, what sin is, why He died, that He was buried, that He rose again, and what He now commands.

Pentecost:The people heard Peter preach Christ.
Samaria:They heard the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ.
Ethiopia:The Ethiopian heard Jesus preached from Isaiah.
Cornelius:His household heard words whereby they would be saved.

No diagnosis can be accepted until truth is heard.

No faith can exist apart from revelation.

No salvation comes apart from the gospel.

That is why the first step is not feeling, but hearing.

Hebrews 11:6 · Mark 16:16

Believe

Faith in Christ Is Essential

Hebrews 11:6

"Without faith it is impossible to please him."

Mark 16:16

"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved."

Biblical faith is more than mere mental agreement. It is not merely admitting that Jesus existed or that certain facts are true. Even demons believe certain truths and tremble (James 2:19). Saving faith is trust that yields surrender.

→Faith is the hand that reaches toward the remedy.
→Faith is the heart's trust in the Physician.
→Faith is the beginning of obedient response.

True faith moves. True faith submits. True faith acts upon what God has said.

Acts 17:30

Repent

A Changed Mind That Produces a Changed Life

Acts 17:30

"God… now commandeth all men every where to repent."

Repentance is not a suggestion for unusually wicked people. It is God's command to all who would come to Him.

The Greek word metanoia — a change of mind — but in Scripture, this is not a mere intellectual adjustment. It is a change of heart and will that results in a change of direction. A turning away from sin and a turning toward God.

Repentance means the sinner no longer makes peace with rebellion. He sees sin for what it is — evil against God — and determines to leave it behind.

Jesus preached repentance.

The apostles preached repentance.

The early church called sinners to repentance.

Healing cannot occur where rebellion is still being protected. The Physician does not heal the soul while the patient insists on clinging to the disease.

Repentance is where the heart bows to God's verdict.

Romans 10:9–10 · Acts 8:36–37

Confess

Confessing Christ Before Men

Romans 10:9–10

"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

Acts 8:37 — The Ethiopian Eunuch

"I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

Confessed his faith before being baptized.

Confession matters because faith is not meant to remain hidden in cowardice or silence. Christ is to be acknowledged openly.

→The sinner is no longer ashamed to belong to Jesus.
→He no longer hides behind secrecy.
→He stands with Christ openly.

Acts 2:38 · Acts 22:16 · Romans 6:3–4

Be Baptized

Into Christ, For the Remission of Sins

This is the step many modern teachings try to minimize, redefine, or push aside. But Scripture speaks too clearly to ignore it.

Acts 2:38

"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins."

Galatians 3:27

"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

Acts 22:16

"Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

1 Peter 3:21

"The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us."

So what is baptism biblically?

→It is immersion in water.
→It is done in the name of Jesus Christ.
→It is for the remission of sins.
→It is where one is united with Christ's death and resurrection.
→It is where one puts on Christ.
→It is where the sinner, in obedient faith, submits to God's appointed means of entering the saving work of Christ.

This is not salvation by water.

It is salvation by grace through the work of Christ, received in the obedient response God has ordained. Baptism has no power apart from Christ. But man has no right to separate what God has joined.

The Heart of the Objection

Why Baptism Matters So Much

Because God Attached Meaning to It

Some object to baptism because they fear it makes salvation into a work. But Scripture never treats obedient faith as boasting merit.

Naaman

Dipped in the Jordan — the power was not in the water, but in God who commanded it.

Jericho

The walls fell after marching — the power was not in the marching, but in the God who promised.

Baptism

The power is not in the water — it is in Christ, through the response He commands.

The real question is not, "Would I have designed it this way?" The real question is, "What did God say?"

→If God says baptism is where sins are washed away, then faith obeys.
→If God says baptism places one into Christ, then faith submits.
→If God says baptism now saves, then faith does not argue.
×A prescription only helps the patient who receives it as given.
×To reject the prescription is not freedom. It is resistance.

Revelation 2:10 · 1 Peter 2:9

Live Faithfully

Salvation Begins a New Life

Becoming a Christian is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new life in Christ.

Revelation 2:10

"Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."

1 Peter 2:9

"Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation."

This life of faithfulness includes:

→Worship
→Holiness
→Prayer
→Obedience
→Service
→Endurance
→Growth
→Perseverance

The plan of salvation is not merely about a moment. It is about entering a covenant life with Christ and remaining faithful within it. The Great Physician not only forgives; He transforms.

The Apostolic Record

What Must I Do to Be Saved?

The Pattern Seen Throughout Acts

When we ask, "What must I do to be saved?" we are not asking for man-made tradition. We are asking for the apostolic pattern. And in the book of Acts, that pattern appears again and again.

Acts 2Pentecost
Acts 8The Samaritans
Acts 8The Ethiopian Eunuch
Acts 9 & 22Saul of Tarsus
Acts 10Cornelius & Household
Acts 16Lydia
Acts 16The Philippian Jailer

All show that salvation was not presented as a vague inward experience detached from obedience. It was a real response to a real gospel under the authority of Christ.

1 Peter 3:21

"There is also an antitype which now saves us — baptism… through the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
×The power is not in ritual.
✓The power is in Christ. But the response He commands must not be ignored.
Romans 1:5 — The Obedience of Faith

This Is Grace, Not Human Merit

Obedience Does Not Replace Grace — It Receives It

Some fear that this pattern makes salvation depend on human effort. Scripture teaches the opposite. Salvation is by the grace of God. Christ did what no sinner could ever do. He lived perfectly, died sacrificially, rose victoriously, and now offers salvation freely.

But grace does not eliminate response. Grace calls for faith. Faith responds in obedience. This is why the New Testament can speak of "the obedience of faith" (Romans 1:5).

×Hearing does not earn grace.
×Believing does not earn grace.
×Repenting does not earn grace.
×Confessing does not earn grace.
×Baptism does not earn grace.
×Faithful living does not earn grace.

The gift is free.

Purchased by Christ's blood.

The response is required.

Commanded by God's word.

The glory belongs to God.

Not to the obedient sinner.
